Character Information
Name: min kyun.
Canon: original.
Canon Point: current.
Age: 19
History:
✦ his birth doesn't signify anything special; it's just as ordinary as most of them, on a cloudy night in new york, in a cramped hospital room. his father is american, his mother's korean -- they fell in love and didn't plan for a child, and were nowhere ready for it.
✦ taking care of the child drains his mother. it shows; she soon gets sick and promptly dies when he's still barely two, and his father drowns in alcohol and despair.
✦ as soon as he can walk, he spends most of his time out of the house. with neighbors, who feed him and teach him the alphabet, and with the more suspicious lot out on the street, who relate to him in his abandonment.
✦ when his power awakens, it's hardly a radiant, enlightening moment; instead, he touches someone, goes blind for the first time, and sees their nearing future -- namely, them getting hit by a car and dying soon after.
✦ he can't save them, he's 8. he's not sure what he could've done, but he blames himself for it regardless - still, when he tells people about the power, and the sudden spike of people with odd talents all across the world, they use him to make quick money and abuse it, resulting in his vision quickly detoriating.
✦ by the time he enters adolescence, he's almost completely blind. the only way he sees the world through is the ability to see the future, as well as the past. he can also see through other people's - or creature's - eyes.
✦ as it soon turns out, their talents aren't actually gifts or blessings -- they're curses, stealing from you until you run dry, like a sickness, most commonly called corpore -- body and soul.
✦ they call the carriers halfsouls, their lives stolen from them in exchange for questionable gifts. they quickly become societal outcasts, with people fearing the spread of the illness.
✦ his father is too far gone to understand that this isn't true. one day, when kyun's barely 15, he attacks him in panic -- shouting about how he doesn't want to go blind, and how his son's a curse who killed his wife. forced to defend himself, he wrestles the knife out of his drunk's dad's hand easily, and stabs him instead.
✦ after that, his life quickly spirals. he's got enough connections out on the streets to be able to get rid of the body -- but the guilt weighs him down constantly, and living alone and blind, not yet and adult and just barely scraping through in school, is particularly hard.
✦ for a brief time, he ends up joining a street gang, if only to have a place to live and people who'd look out for him. but it's hardly a shelter; he has to contribute if he wants to stay, and debts pile up.
✦ he ends up a highschool dropout, focusing more on working -- even if he knows that abusing his powers is only going to take more and more out of him, until a halfsoul becomes none.
✦ after reaching adulthood, he leaves to start a new life, no longer concerned with the abuse of his powers. it seems as if sight was the only thing taken from him -- and he still can see, just not through his own eyes. people pay good money to know their future, no matter how fatal it might be.
Personality:
contrary to the undoubtedly negative connotations of his past, kyun's not as much of a byproduct of all that's happened to him as one would expect. he's never been the kind to dwell on what has been; it might've changed and shaped him, sure, but tomorrow's another day, and if he were to hold onto all the bitterness and pain, he'd never be able to properly enjoy it. he does have moments of weakness and despair, sure -- everyone does -- but in that way, he's also very much an escapist; always chased by memories, and always attempting to dodge them, desperately and stubbornly focusing on the road ahead.
his stubbornness is actually a very defining trait -- once he's set his mind on something, it's hard to change it, unless very trivial. over the years, he'd learned that holding onto your beliefs is one of the most important things you can do -- if everyone was a yes-man, that'd leave the scarce headstrong people in an unfair position of power, right? similarly, he has very little respect for people who don't particularly believe in anything or have a strong opinion on important matters on their own -- he'd much rather argue with someone, and maybe learn something new, than have someone agree with him on everything.
needless to say, for a blind person, he can be quite fighty; not necessarily physically, as his strength is nothing to brag about, but verbally. quite hard to actually annoy, he enjoys making jabs at people and can come off quite cruel -- though he hardly ever aims to actually hurt anybody's feelings. if anything, it's his way of keeping emotions aside, and people at bay -- because there's hardly anything that scares him more than closeness, and if people think he's rude, they're bound to stay away, right? he's seen far too many breakups -- far too many lost loved ones, not necessarily through his own eyes, but through someone else's. that taught him to stay away from troublesome relationships, and emotional attachment; learning from other people's mistakes is smart, or so he tells himself, at least.
in reality, he harbors a deep-rooted need to belong; to be needed, loved and appreciated, though he'd never admit it. it's constantly at war with the smart side of him, that knows getting close to people ends in nothing but pain, and the side of him that thinks so very little of himself he's sure he doesn't deserve love in the first place. after halfsouls were exposed for what they were -- cursed beings, brought forth to spread illness rather than blessings, he's heard enough about how worthless he is; that, in turn, made him believe he's got no real place among humans anymore, and made him lose his purpose. in the end, he'd decided that all he can do to repent for a cursed existence is help others via this questionable gift -- if he's at least slightly useful towards humanity, maybe the blemish he leaves on earth won't be as destructive.
his self-hatred and lack of any confidence is thoroughly masked by constant jokes and a tendency to react to everything with a dose of sarcasm. his vulnerabilities get exposed easily, when others are earnest with him, however -- and because he's got so little experience in all matters emotional, he tends to react like a broken record, frozen in his tracks. on the contrary, he's got plenty of knowledge when it comes to the physical -- finding himself essentially worthless and undesirable, he's no stranger to sleeping around and drowning in pleasure to forget. his powers are also touch-based; without direct physical contact with the target, he can't activate them.
on his better days, he's actually a pretty relaxed guy, and generally very fond of people. because of all the humans he's helped before, he can be pretty empathetic, too; though he always reminds himself that most of the things he's experienced in others' heads aren't something he, himself, has lived through. because of that, he also tends to be brutally honest and earnest; kinder towards people he likes, and petty and childish towards those he doesn't. he knows he's not the nicest guy in the world, but pointless cruelty has always been a surefire way to get him mad; those who don't live and let live immediately go on his shit list.
and so despite his penchant for unpleasantness, inside, he carries a heavy heart. he's always stuck to the firm belief that if he, himself, can't be saved -- from losing his sight, or his soul, or his family -- then at the very least he'll make sure others can. if someone else's misery can be somehow prevented, then it's worth suffering for; in that way, he's a bit of a martyr, though driven largely by his own guilt. regardless of said ulterior motives, he's also motivated by his own niceness, which he sometimes tends to call a weakness. as much as he'd like to be the cool guy he pretends to be, he's got a soft spot for human pain and suffering, and has a hard time simply leaving others be. on the contrary, when it comes to himself, he cares... very little -- his well-being has never been a priority, and in secret, he idolizes the idea of a sacrificial death.
maybe it'd be enough to repent.
Abilities & Skills:
the gift of clairvoyance, otherwise known as the 'clear vision' has been with kyun since childhood. it works as expected: upon direct contact, kyun can see information about the item or the person he's touching. it can be anything, from the future to the past, from secrets to memories and thoughts -- he doesn't control what he sees, exactly, but he has a fair grasp on the power's activation. it does go haywire, sometimes; random activations happen, though not often. if he's the one being touched and not vice-versa, the chance of the power's activation are slim, but accidents are still possible.
upon activation, his eyes go white -- he then sees whatever the power allows him to. he can focus on whatever he wants to see the most, but it's not always entirely under his control. back during his childhood, the repercussions of using his power were temporary losses of vision and dizziness. eventually, he's lost his vision altogether, both from using the power and from the halfsoul condition. the power is affected by all things spiritual -- upon touching a medium, for example, he can see the spirits surrounding them. upon touching a haunted object, he can see the ghost attached to it. upon touching another power-user, his own power is more prone to going haywire.
he uses the power mostly to help people in need -- seek out missing persons, find out whether somebody has been lying, occasionally tell people their future. it's the only thing he knows how to do, really; the only way he knows how to help others.
